LAS VEGAS
The American Bridge Teachers' Association (ABTA) will sponsor its annual
Seminar and Convention at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel prior to the NABC
this summer. All bridge teachers are invited to register:

If you are told by Mega Housing that the
Las Vegas Hilton is
full, ask if ACBL has put aside any rooms for ABTA. The room rate
is $95 weekdays
(Sunday through Thursday) and $135 on Friday and Saturday nights.
Reservations for the 2008 Summer NABC in Las Vegas will close on June 20th.
Reservations needed after this date will be processed based on availability.

afternoon – Registration from 1 to 1:15 PM
Speakers include: Brian Richardson, Pat Harrington,
Sandra Stevens and others to be determined. The seminar will focus on
modern teaching techniques and the use of technology for teaching and
running your business. Your registration confirmation will update you on
plans for the group to go out for dinner together (Dutch treat) prior to the
Tuesday evening meeting of Board members. There is a Tuesday night 3 hour
tour of Las Vegas (dinner not included) from 7-10PM

but unfortunately this is sold out. Check with Mega Housing for other
Hotels in the area. Make your reservations with the ACBL Housing

AIRPORTS:
Fly into the McCarran International Airport
in Las Vegas, Nevada. Gray Line Airport Express services all Las Vegas
hotels. The cost from the airport to the Las Vegas Hilton is $6 one way and
$11 round trip. You can find Gray Line Airport Express by following the
signs to Ground Transportation. No reservation needed from the airport, but
reservations are needed for your return trip to the airport. Call Gray Line
at (702) 739-5700 - they operate 24 hours a day.
ENTERTAINMENT:
Nancy Abbott is our Hospitality Chair. Nancy will coordinate our group
dining together at the Hilton buffet (Dutch Treat) on Tuesday evening.
There is a 3 hour double-decker bus tour of the Strip and downtown Las
Vegas with 4 stops for $25 on Tuesday (Dinner not included) from
7:00-10:00PM. You will be picked up and dropped off back at the Las Vegas
Hilton. For our Wednesday evening group activity, Nancy has planned a
Benihana dinner and show package for $99. This includes all taxes and tips
plus 2 drinks at the show (well drinks, wine, beer, or sodas – NO Dom
Perignon!) The show is the Scintas – check out the website at lvhilton.com
for more information. You must reserve for the activites in advance.

BECOME
A MASTER TEACHER: If you are not
already an ABTA Master Teacher, fulfill the requirements at this year's
Convention. New Master Teachers will be honored at our Convention Banquet.
In order to apply for the title of ABTA Master Teacher, you must fulfill the
following requirements:

3 years of continuous ABTA
membership

100 or more hours of
professional bridge teaching experience

Attendance at an ABTA
Seminar and Convention

Personal interview with
Membership Credentials Committee on Tuesday morning, July 15.

Your application letter should include: a
summary of your background as a bridge teacher; teaching materials (textbook
name, course outline, samples of materials, etc.); and a description of your
teaching style including who, when, and where you teach. Pat Harrington will
notify you of the time of your personal interview. Master Teacher
interviews will be conducted between 8 AM and noon on Tuesday morning, July
15. Please plan your travel accordingly. It will be necessary for you to
arrive on Monday. You will be asked to answer questions about
your teaching as well as questions that test your knowledge of bridge.

ABTA Master Teacher, read the sample questions in Pat Harrington's articles
in the current Winter 2008 Quarterly Magazine.

MEETINGS AND MASTER TEACHER
INTERVIEW SCHEDULE: Officers,
Committee Heads, and Board Members should plan on meeting on Tuesday evening
after dinner and on Friday morning at 7:30 AM. We will meet for an informal
dinner early on Monday evening with the hope of discussing agenda items to
expedite our regular meetings. All interested Board members are invited.
Membership Credential Committee members should be available for Tuesday
morning interviews. Specific meeting information will be e-mailed to you
closer to the Convention dates.
APPLEBASKET TIPS – ENTER TO
WIN OUR CRYSTAL APPLE
Our Applebasket chairman, Sanda Enciu, is
eagerly awaiting your entry for this year's contest. The winner will be
presented with a crystal apple at our banquet. Entries must be at most one
page on paper suitable for copying (no letterhead or other identifying
feature). Remember – good things come in small packages. You need not attend
the Convention to win. Sanda will be away June 15 thru July 1 and won’t
respond to emails until she gets back.

VENDORS:
Any member wishing to sell or display bridge products (for a single
manufacturer or product line only) is asked to notify Deborah Murphy by June
20. All vendors are required to register for the Convention and pay the
regular registration fee. Space may be limited so tables can only be
guaranteed for those who reserve in advance.
NEED A ROOMMATE?
Experience has shown that it’s better for our members to arrange for their
own roommates. If you need help finding a roommate, try posting your
request on our ABTA message board. If you are not a message board
participant, contact Maggie Sparrow (msparrow@csolve.net) to join.
