ABTA: Home of the American Bridge Teachers' Association

“To help those who teach bridge to do it better, more effectively, more knowledgeably, more professionally.”

The 2016 Teacher of the Year Winner!

Leslie Shafer, of Gaithersburg MD, was awarded the 2016 American Bridge Teachers Association (ABTA) Teacher of the Year, Thursday, at the ABTA Summer Conference.  A grassroots teacher who is known for her humor, passion, and creativity, she is a club owner and ABTA Master Teacher. Having taught thousands of students, at all levels of competence, she easily met the challenging criteria to win this prestigious honor and cash award plus crystal trophy, sponsored by Master Point Press.

With innovative teaching methods, Leslie teaches several classes each week. Her instruction covers difficult concepts, in stages. She “makes the tough stuff fun and learning becomes a joy,” stated one of her students. She relates bridge concepts with humor, in such a way that her students remember them in the actual play. Leslie feels that “we (teachers) should be entertainers, as well as teachers. Students who have a good time in class, not only return, they bring their friends.”
A past president of the ABTA, Leslie is also the former editor of the ABTA Quarterly publication and “Bridge Students R Us” newsletter. Along with her spouse, Charlie Williams, she hosts bridge classes and workshops on a regular basis. She participates in community outreach programs to benefit our injured veterans and an animal rescue league, in the Washington area.

Seven other finalists were recognized at the Conference, from a pool of sixty-five nominees. They are Joann Glasson, Pennington NJ; Rex Glimp, El Paso TX;  Jay Helekar, Orange CA; Henry Meguid, Durham NC; Dallas Moore, Dayton OH; Enid Roitman, Toronto Canada;  and Glenna Shannahan, Madison WI.
